Business Challenges- Enjoy the Journey
Challenges are an inevitable part of the entrepreneurs journey and by their very nature will take you outside of your comfort zone. This is not a bad thing and quite often overcoming challenges can be the most satisfying part of the journey.
Just like a mountain climber overcoming struggles to reach the summit, the challenge will be as rewarding as reaching the summit itself.
However for a mountaineer or somebody who loves the outdoors, climbing a mountain might seem like an exciting and fun challenge, but for somebody less active it might seem like their worst nightmare. Within your own business are your challenges fun/ stimulating or your worse nightmare?
Ultimately If you are not really enjoying your business journey it’s more likely that you will be tempted to give up along the way.
It’s worth noting however that your ability to overcome challenges and perhaps actually even enjoy them might surprise you.
In my outdoor activity business, I once put together an event for a large corporation, it was called “The Forest Challenge” it was based in the Brecon Beacons. It was developed to cater for a range of ages and abilities.
It was a team competition which involved a navigational exercise and a series of physical, skilful and mental challenges, teams would gain points for how well they performed.
On planning I decided to add a nerve wracking abseil over a waterfall, I didn’t tell the client as I thought they might panic and possibly even request to pull this challenge. Regardless the challenge was going to be optional so nobody would be under pressure to take part but each team would gain more points if they did.
When the event took place we had quite a few participants who were completely out of their comfort zone. By their own admission some were not normally very active or sporty and their fear was obvious. Some actually started to cry, I was beginning to wonder if I had made the right decision!
Many were petrified, fear clearly etched on their faces, they dug deep however confronted their fears and with courage pushed their way through.
With words of encouragement from myself and my instructors and not wanting to let their team members down everyone of them made the decision to have a go.
Their elation and sense of accomplishment on completion was obvious, they were absolutely buzzing and so were we. Sufficient to say feedback was fantastic and the client loved the event and have booked every year since.
Ultimately If we are not really enjoying the journey towards our destination of ‘targets’ and ‘goals’ it’s more likely that we will be tempted to give up along the way. Becoming a successful entrepreneur is not an easy path, and overcoming challenges often requires a helping hand.
